Vrana Lake Nature Park - day trip
Book your vacation
Vrana Lake Nature Park is the largest natural lake in Croatia. It is also one of the largest wetlands in Mediterranean Croatia. The total area of the park is 57 km2, while the surface of the lake is 2 meters above sea level, and the bottom is 4 meters below sea level. Due to the fact that the bottom of the lake is lower than the sea level, salty sea water penetrates the lake and makes it brackish. Due to its size and characteristics, the lake is unique in Croatia and the wider European area.
In 1983, Lake Vrana was declared an Ornithological Reserve. The unique climatic conditions, soil and plant cover have created a perfect place for numerous species of birds. About 235 species of birds have been recorded in the park so far, of which 102 are nesting birds, while the rest of the lake is a resting place during migration or a wintering place. The ideal period when there are the most species of birds on the lake are spring and autumn.
In addition to the wealth of flora and fauna, the Vrana Lake Nature Park contains numerous remains of cultural and historical heritage. One of the oldest historical buildings by the lake is the late antique tower "Osridak" from the 4th century. Among the military buildings, the Venetian tower of the 15th century stands out. As far as religious buildings are concerned, the largest is the Old Town of Vrana, built at the end of the 9th century. Initially, it was a Benedictine monastery, and later the seat of the Templars and Ivano-Frankivsks.
In addition to the natural and cultural beauty, visitors can also enjoy kayaking, mountain trails, bike trails, an adventure park and other interesting activities.
